One of Chester’s top choirs is looking to welcome new members ahead of a busy year of performances including an upcoming concert featuring a Chester-based rising young musical theatre star.
With a busy schedule of events planned for the remainder of 2024, Chester Male Voice Choir is seeking to expand its membership and is keen to hear from men of all ages and backgrounds, particularly those from groups who are traditionally underrepresented in male voice choirs. Founded in 1941, the choir has a wide ranging repertoire which includes everything from traditional songs to modern pop hits and songs from stage and screen.
The choir is currently preparing for its annual Spring Festival concert which will take place at St Columba's Church in Chester on Friday 17th May at 7pm.
The concert will feature rising young musical theatre star Phoebe Cheffings as the choir’s special guest. A Year 9 pupil at Chester's Catholic High School, Phoebe, 13 has a string of musical theatre credits to her name including making her professional debut in the premiere of Joss Stone and Dave Stewart's Musical "The Time Traveller's Wife" at Storyhouse in 2022. Other credits include "Anything Goes" (Dee and Alyn G&S Society, Theatr Clwyd), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (Children's choir, Tip Top Productions, Theatr Clwyd), Only Kids Aloud Choir at St David's Hall, Cardiff and most recently playing the lead role in her school's production of "Annie". Phoebe is also one of the singers with the Chester Catholic High School Swing Band.
Other events already in the pipeline for the choir include a concert tour of the Isle of Man. The choir will also be hosting members of Perth Male Voice Choir from Australia who will be visiting Chester as guests of the choir in July. Both choirs will take part in a special concert at Chester Town Hall. Other highlights include a concert with Sale Brass Band in Timperley and the Cheshire Police annual Carol Service at Chester Cathedral.
Speaking about the choir's Spring concert, Ron Webster, Chair of Chester Male Voice Choir said:
“ I am delighted to announce the guest artist for our upcoming Spring Festival Concert is Pheobe Cheffings, a wonderful young singer who at only 13 years old, has already starred in many musical productions including playing Cossette in her school's production of "Les Misérables" as well as performing various roles throughout the UK, most certainly a rising star of the future. We have recently expanded our concert repertoire with a plethora of new pieces to please all age groups. We've listened to audience feedback and have moved our concert start times to 7pm. Tickets are available now via our website or from Chester visitor centre at Chester Town Hall.”
Ron added:
“With a busy year of concerts and events ahead and led by our talented music team headed by our Musical Director Joe Mann, we are excited to begin to present our new repertoire. We will be encouraging young talent to perform with us and are keen to welcome new members, especially those men from underrepresented groups within the Chester area. If you have always enjoyed singing and are looking for a new challenge please come and join us at one of our rehearsals or contact us through our website. Rehearsals take place at St Columba’s Church Hall each Sunday at 7pm where everyone receives a warm welcome."
