A local MP has been made the patron of a charity for adult men

The Port Men In Sheds has so far attracted about 60 members – many of them retired – who get together to during the week to pursue their many leisure interests.

Justin Madders, MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston, paid a visit to the facilities at Unit 25, Junction 8 Business Park, Rosscliffe Road, Ellesmere Port (CH65 3AS) to meet some of the members who, among activities, hone their woodworking, music and a variety of other skills including ukulele and banjo playing. They even have a small gym which is regularly used by a 96-year-old fitness fan.

The organisation achieved charitable status back in September 2020 but because of the pandemic it took a full year before activities were properly up and running.

Mr Madders said: “I am a great fan of the concept of men with skills, or who would like to develop their interests, getting together, so it is a pleasure and honour to accept the invitation to become patron of The Port Men In Sheds.

“There are some seriously talented individuals involved. Equally there are those who might feel socially isolated and just want to meet up for a cup of tea or coffee. There is an inclusive atmosphere and anyone over the age of 18 is welcome.”

The organisation used to be formerly linked to Age UK Cheshire, but Hooton resident Mike Doherty, chairman of the board of trustees, and colleagues are now on the lookout for more affordable premises.

At the moment they need £22,000 a year to keep going and rely on grants and donations to add to the affordable daily fees that users of the facility pay.
On average, about 20-30 members of The Port Men In Sheds meet up on week days.

Anyone interested in joining them is asked to contact 07878 174312.
