As the 40th Anniversary of the end of the historic 1984/85, year-long Miner's Strike approaches, West Cheshire Trades Union Council is bringing Banner Theatre's production of "Battle Lines" to Ellesmere Port.
The production is on for one night only at 7 pm on Saturday 22nd March, at Theatre Porto, Whitby Park, Ellesmere Port, CH65 6QY - with tickets available from Eventbrite at £5 or £8 (£3 for students).
Battle Lines re-visits the striking mining communities - which locally included Bersham in Wrexham, and Point of Ayr in Flintshire - and celebrates in song, music and video the historic working class struggle. It also links this historic fight to the battles of today - such as the union recognition dispute at Amazon, in Coventry, and struggles in the Global South, like the massive farmers strike in India.
"Banner arouse emotions ranging from joy to utter sadness, from despair to anger, and then to firm determination" Peter Lazenby, Yorkshire Evening Post.
"All the things we live with today; the zero hours contracts, the foodbanks, the under-employment, the bogus self-employment, the huge level of inequality that has emerged in the last generation - all that was made possible by breaking the most significant obstacle to that kind of economy and society, which was the power of organised labour and the trade union movement."
Seamus Milne, Author of The Enemy Within Locally trade unionists from Chester mainly supported striking miners at Bersham, while those from Ellesmere Port supported Point of Ayr strikers based in Prestatyn.
Food and money was collected outside supermarkets most weeks, and taken to the strikers. We also joined pickets at the road entrance to Point of Ayr Colliery. Some support was also give to Lancashire Miners, at Sutton Manor, Bold and Parkside - and local protest marches, such as that held in St Helens.
The production is supported by West Cheshire UNISON, Cheshire West & Chester National Education Union and the Vauxhall Unite Shop Stewards Committee.
