Here's the weekend results for the Chester and Wirral Football League...

Mersey Royal vets and Hooton vets resumed their rivalry last Tuesday night at Vauxhall’s Vaneupen Arena in the Vets Cheshire cup final. Hooton looking to avenge last months Life Members quarter final defeat against Royal took the lead midway into the second half when JP Stanhope pounced. Not long after and Will Bulpin hit back to level matters for Royal, only for Royal to then go down to ten men in the latter stages of the game. The game ended 1-1 and it was off to penalties which seen Hooton get off to worst possible start,missing their first two penalties.  But Royal missed three of their own as the Hoot won the shoot-out 3-2 with keeper Kieran Burnett the hero saving two Royal spot kicks. Congratulations to Hooton on winning the first Vets Cheshire cup. This Friday 3^rd April will see Mersey Royal have the chance of revenge when both sides do it all again in the Wirral Junior Cup final to be played at Camell Lairds 7pm kick off.

Twenty-four hours earlier on Monday night in the Life Members quarter final and Higher Bebington Kelma vets again took the scalp of another open age team as they travelled to Hoole Rangers and came away with an impressive 2-1 victory courtesy of goals from Mark Jones and Shaun Burgess.  Kelma will now meet unbeaten Premier Division champions Waggon & Horses in the semi-final whilst Mersy Royal will play Sutton Rangers in the other semi-final with both games being played on Saturday 11^th May at The King George astro pitch with Waggon v Kelma kicking off at 1-30pm and Royal v Sutton kicking off at 4pm. Whilst in the Tom Gerraghty semi-final Witton Albion vets and Hartford vets played out a 0-0 stalemate and it took penalties to see Hartford move into the final.

In the CWFL Queensferry Sports Premier Division, Dan Wagstaff on his first start after a long-term injury netted a brilliant, lobbed goal from outside the box for Farndon, but Chester Nomads struck back via a Tim Ashbrook double and an Osian Jones single to see Nomads take all three points.

Onto Wednesday night and it was semi-final action as Lache vets secured their place in the Chester DFA Pele vets final as they came away with a fine 4-1 win at Upton JFC vets. Jake Gibbons was a two-goal hero and Warren Kelly and Nick Whittaker added singles to send Lache into the final where they will meet Frodsham vets.  In the second Tom Gerraghty semi-final Goals from Aiden Ryan and Aaron Doyle gave Wirral Masters a 2-0 victory against Cheshire Vikings vets. Masters will now meet Hartford vets in the final of the CWFL Tom Gerraghty.

In the Olympic Trophies Championship Cestrian Alex defeated Neston Nomads by the odd goal in five thanks to goals from Niall Peaker and Will Kitchen plus an own goal. Nomads’ consolations goals came from Will Suker and Alex Butterworth.

On Friday night in the second CWFL Doug Johnson semi-final, Hooton vets fresh from winning the Cheshire vets cup 3 days earlier came crashing down to earth against second division Winsford vets The initial 90 minutes had ended 2-2 with JP Stanhope and Dave Rudge on target for Hooton whilst Matthew Walmsely and John Hurst both bagged for Winsford and in the resulting shoot-out it was Winsford who ran out 3-0 winners to progress through and will now meet Higher Bebington Kelma vets in the final.

On the same night in the CWFL Tarvin Precision vets Division 1 Mersey Royal vets got back to their ruthless best as they defeated nearest league rivals Higher Bebington Kelma vets to all but secure the league title. Lee Davey bagged a treble to go along with a Lee Gibson double and a Danny Edwards single.

On Saturday in the last remaining CWFL Life Members cup quarter final a double from Conor Allen, plus singles from Shakeel Sterling and Oli Waggot sent Sutton Rangers into the semi-final in a 4-2 victory against Neston Nomads reserves. Sutton will now meet Mersey Royal vets.

In the CWFL Tarvin Precision vets Division 2 Upton Youth Vets moved five points clear of nearest rivals Neston Nomads thanks to a superb 4-1 win against Birkenhead Vets. Danny Stevenson, Dave Roberts, James McKintosh and Mike Ashford all netted for Upton who are now the favourites to take the second division title.

In the CWFL Tarvin Vets Division 5 Port Sunlight vets moved up to third after coming from behind twice to beat Crossway vets in a seven-goal thriller.  Crossway took the lead thanks to Justin Osuhi but were quickly pegged back when Chris Mason drew the Soap men level. Sunlight then went ahead thanks to Richard Garnett’s quick reactions only for Wes Roberts to make it 2-2 with a fierce strike. Crossway now on the front foot took the lead again thanks a close-range effort from Damian Sails. In the second half Andy Crilly turned and fired home from the edge of the box to make it 3-3 and Mark Ried completed the comeback when he netted from the spot as Sunlight’s replacement keeper Alkins produced a string of top saves to secure the 3 points as Port Sunlight hung on for the win.

Rake & Pikle had Edwin Reyes to thank as his two goals helped Pikle to three points in a 3-2 win against Poulton Athletic vets. Rich Catton also netted for Pikle.
