Chester and Wirral Football League - Weekend Round Up

One CWFL Life Members Cup second round game on Friday night, with Premier League leaders Moreton securing a narrow 2-1 victory over bottom side Chester Nomads 3rds. Despite the contrasting league positions, the match proved to be a tightly contested affair. Goals from James Broadbent and Andy Noonan were enough to see Moreton through, while Lou Moss netted a consolation goal for the Nomads.

On the same night in the second round of the CWFL Doug Johnson Cup, Third Division side Eastham Vets faced a daunting away trip to Mersey Royal Vets. Despite a valiant effort, Eastham were unable to contain Royal’s attacking prowess, with the hosts securing an emphatic victory. Danny Edwards led the scoring with a hat-trick, while Robbo Courtney, Chris McGinn, Will Bulpin, Danny Cowle, and Anthony Sheehan all bagged doubles. Eastham responded with goals from Dave Sadler and Dan Nettleton with the game finishing 12-2.

Saturday seen four more Doug Johnson second-round clashes, with the standout result coming from FC Farndon Vets, who produced a shock 5-2 away victory over Division One side Neston Nomads Vets. Roy Cardous and Kiran Tudor both struck twice, with Garient Jenkins also on the scoresheet. Neston’s goals came via Sam Bunbury and Ben Pearson.

Cheshire Cup finalists Capenhurst Vets had to battle hard at Winsford Vets but edged a 3-2 win. Liam Davenport, Matty Kavanagh, and Tony Ashton were on target for Capenhurst, while Steven Warburton and Ryan Ashall found the net for Winsford.

Birkenhead Vets secured an impressive 8-3 victory over Third Division leaders Hartford Vets. Lee Gibson found the net four times, while Ricci Loughran and Stevie Jones each struck twice to seal a dominant win, Meanwhile Ellesmere Port Red Lions’ Graeme Davidson was the star man, scoring a hat-trick and earning the Man of the Match award in a 5-1 triumph over West Kirby United Vets. Ben Powell and James Hudson also got on the scoresheet, while Sean Moore netted West Kirby’s solitary goal.

Lache have taken top spot in the CWFL Olympic Trophies Championship after an emphatic 5-1 win over Chester Nomads 4ths. League top scorer Warren Kelly extended his tally with a hat-trick, while Josh Jones and Lewis Neal also found the net. Jonny Alpas grabbed Nomads’ lone goal. Meanwhile, Upton JFC 3rds secured a convincing 4-0 victory against Fender FC, with Joe Walsh netting twice and further strikes from Joe Hall and Tom Meshham.

In the only CWFL Queensferry Premier Division fixture, Kelsall edged past Handbridge 2-1, thanks to goals from Dom Coates and Josh Torlop, while Ryan Bradley netted for Handbridge.

CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets League Division Four produced a thrilling contest, as Dee Rangers Vets edged a nine-goal thriller 5-4 against Nags Head Bunbury Vets. Luke Bedson led the charge with a brace, with Catton, Surry, and Leonardo Matteus also on target. Nags Head’s goals came from a Henry Buckley double, alongside strikes from Alistair Taylor and Alex Morrisroe. League leaders Upton JFC Vets were held to a 2-2 draw away at Wirral Masters, with Danny Payne and Jamie Mellor scoring for the hosts. Meanwhile, Frodsham Park JFC capitalised on Upton’s slip-up, closing the gap to just one point with a clinical 3-0 away win at Hoole Rangers Vets. Ant Ollier bagged a brace, with Kev Valentine also getting in on the act. In Division Five, Cheshire Vikings Vets maintained their fine form with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Great Sutton Vets. Michael Large and Michael Shaw were the match-winners, while Gaz Handley netted for Great Sutton. West Kirby Vets turned on the style in a dominant 9-1 victory over bottom side Frodsham Park Vets Reserves. Lee Bedding was the hat-trick hero, John Oliver helped himself to a brace, and there were further goals from Ian Davies, Dave Cowie, Justin McDonald, and Ian Linwood. Frodsham’s solitary goal came courtesy of Will Beales.
