With the weekend dominated by Vets League and Cup fixtures, there was just one game to report in the open age, the CWFL Olympic Trophies Championship. It proved to be a thrilling encounter as West Kirby thirds and Waggon & Horses Reserves played out a 3-3 draw. Ant Jacobs, George Baker, and Joe McKenzie were the scorers for West Kirby, while Aiden Field netted a brace and Harley Bennion also found the net for Waggon.
On Friday night in the Tarvin Precision Vets Division 1, Mersey Royal extended their fine run of form with a comprehensive 5-1 win over Hooton Vets. Mikey Burke was the star of the show, bagging a hat-trick, with his third being a sublime 25-yard effort that curled into the top corner. Anthony Cotgrave and Danny Edwards also got on the scoresheet. Hooton’s lone goal came from Dave Rudge.
Saturday saw a determined performance from Queens Park Vets, who were reduced to just 10 men after four players dropped out on the morning of the match. Facing a full-strength Higher Bebington Kelma Vets, it looked like a tough task. However, Queens held firm to go into the break 0-0, only for Kelma to score with virtually the last kick of the half. But Queens weren’t finished, and centre-back turned striker Steve Anderton was the hero, scoring twice to seal a 2-1 win for the 10 men.
Neston Nomads fell to a 5-2 defeat against Capenhurst Vets, despite goals from Andy Lewis and Jim Thompson. Mitchell Bailey bagged a brace for Capenhurst, while Cam Forster, Phill Strapp, and Lewis Walters also found the net.
Birkenhead Vets triumphed 3-2 over Ellesmere Port Red Lions Vets, with Lee Gibson and James Atherton both scoring from distance, while Ricci Van Loughran netted from close range. For Ellesmere Port, Gray Davidson and Scott Rowley were the scorers.
The CWFL Roodee Web Design/Tom Gerraghty 1st Round delivered plenty of excitement and goals on Saturday. Frodsham Park JFC Reserves Vets and Wirral Masters Vets played out a 4-4 thriller. Simone Spinillo, Will Beales, Nick Foxe, and Chris Carey were the Frodsham scorers, while Mike Richardson, Luke Brennan, Ben Ellis, and Axel Ekani Nkodo found the net for Wirral Masters. The penalty shoot-out was just as tense, with Wirral Masters prevailing 4-3.
In another high-scoring encounter, Cheshire Vikings Vets edged out Hoole Rangers Vets 4-3. Stuart Hardman scored twice, with Micheal Large and Michael Shaw also on target. Hoole’s goals came from Dale Harris, who bagged a brace, and Ben Turner.
Nags Head Bunbury Vets secured a narrow 3-2 win over Hoole Wanderers, with Paul Nicholas, Ed Hulse, and Alex Morrisoe finding the net. Will Campbell and Luke Barrett scored for Hoole Wanderers.
Witton Albion Vets enjoyed a commanding 6-1 victory over Upton JFC Vets, with six different players getting on the scoresheet: Kyle Dyson, Dave Ashley, Simon Smith, Scott Fullwood, Mike Butters, and Dan Holland. In a close match, Poulton Athletic Vets defeated Great Sutton Vets 2-1, with Aiden Ryan and Lee Dermondy scoring for Poulton, while Great Sutton's consolation came from Adam Crosby.
Josh Jones was the hat-trick hero for Crossway Vets as they triumphed 4-1 over Port Sunlight Vets. Matt Russel also scored for Crossway, while Dave Price netted Port Sunlight’s sole goal.
Finally, West Kirby Vets advanced to the next round with a 3-1 win against Frodsham Vets. Lee Bedding, Rich Irvine, and David Cowie scored for West Kirby, while Kev Valentine was the sole scorer for Frodsham.

Queens did well to keep the score line at 0-0 heading into the half time interval only for Kelma to score with virtually the last kick of the half. However, undeterred Queens stuck at it and Centre half become striker Steve Anderton was the hero with two brilliantly taken goals to see Queens snatch the points winning 2-1 for the 10 men.

West Kirby Vets secured their passage into the next round courtesy of efforts from Lee Bedding, Rich Irvine and David Cowie to secure a 3-1 win against Frodsham Vets whose goal came from Kev Valentine.
