The quarterfinals of the CWFL Doug Johnson Cup kicked off in thrilling fashion on Friday night, as Birkenhead Vets hosted league rivals Ellesmere Port Red Lions Vets at Bidston Astro. The match looked destined for penalties after Terry Cotgrave netted for Birkenhead and Gray Davidson netted for Red Lions. However, Chris McCaffrey had other ideas, slotting home a dramatic last-minute winner to send Red Lions into the semi-finals.

Saturday's action saw Queens Park Vets and Higher Bebington Kelma Vets battle to a 1-1 draw, with Simon Tierney scoring for Kelma and replying for Queens was Dean Thomas. In the resulting shoot-out Kelma held their nerve to win 5-4 and book their place in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Capenhurst Vets enjoyed a more comfortable passage to the last four, dispatching FC Farndon Vets with a resounding 8-1 victory. Cameron Forster and Mike Mitchell both bagged braces, while Matty Kavanagh, Ian Armstrong, Tony Ashton, and Mark Ryan also got on the scoresheet. Carlos Centos netted a consolation for Farndon.

In the CWFL Tarvin Precision Cayzer Shield, Cup form defied league standings as bottom-placed Chester Nomads 4ths stunned third-placed Waverton AFC with a 2-1 victory. George Cornes and Richard Birtwhistle were the heroes for Nomads, sealing their spot in the semi-finals.

Waggon & Horses Reserves triumphed over Fender FC with a 4-2 win. Goals from Danny Davies, Rowan Brooks, Aden Parker, and Luke Jones secured victory, while Billy Beasley’s brace for Fender proved in vain. Lache CFC’s clash with Whitegate United ended in a 2-2 stalemate, with Ben Barrett and Warren Kelly scoring for Lache, while Shaun Howarth and Kyle Stubbs found the net for Whitegate. Lache eventually prevailed 8-7 in a tense penalty shootout to advance.

In the only CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Division 3 fixture, league leaders Hartford Vets were on course for all three points as they led 2-1 late on, thanks to goals from Craig Millington and Rob Amies. After Tony Langrell had netted for Parkfield Vets, However, a moment of magic from Luke Griffiths saw him score a stunning overhead kick in the dying seconds, securing a hard-fought point for Parkfield.

Upton JFC Vets tightened their grip on top spot in the CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Division 4 with a 4-2 victory over Hoole Rangers Vets. Tom Jones struck twice, with Ben Walley and David Smith also on target. Dan Eborall and Dave Hughes netted for Hoole in reply. Elsewhere, FC Vaults Vets suffered a 4-1 defeat against Nags Head Bunbury Vets, leaving them struggling at the foot of the table.

Witton Albion Vets surged to the top of the CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Division 5 table with a 3-1 win over Great Sutton Vets, thanks to a Jay Cartlidge brace and a goal from Mike Butters. Terry Orange grabbed the only goal for Great Sutton. Cheshire Vikings Vets have hit peak form at the right time of the season, this time dismantling Frodsham Park Reserves 14-1. Stuart Hardman was in unstoppable form, netting six times, while Ben Fitzgerald helped himself to a hat-trick. Luke Ivory and Michael Large both bagged doubles, and Michael Shaw rounded off the scoring. Vikings now sit third, three points behind Witton Albion and Poulton Athletic Vets (second). West Kirby FC Vets kept their title hopes alive with a dominant 6-1 away victory over Crossway Vets. Lee Bedding and Neil Davies each netted twice, with Nigel Powley and Justin McDonald also getting on the scoresheet. Crossway’s consolation came from Richard Dalton-Morris. At the foot of the table, Port Sunlight Vets picked up a morale-boosting 4-0 win over Hoole Wanderers Vets. Steve Quarry led the way with a brace, while Chris Pollard and Wayne Greve also found the net. With the season heating up, the race for silverware and promotion remains wide open across the divisions.
