Since opening at the beginning of November 2022, Chester’s new market has now welcomed over one million visitors in under six months.
Already a big hit with residents, visitors from across the UK and internationally are also discovering the delights of the new market where you can shop local and eat global.
Recognition from the travel industry has also highlighted the market’s contribution in revitalising the city centre and has been a key element in Chester recently being hailed as the one of the UK’s best high streets, and by National Geographic as one of the top places to visit this year. The new market has also been shortlisted in this year’s Property Week Awards in the Placemaking category.
The Council’s ambition of delivering a ‘modern traditional market’ within the Northgate Development Phase One scheme is now being realised with the creation of a successful and inclusive space for everyone to enjoy; offering a blend of produce, goods and food traders plus events and performances, open six days a week.
Councillor Nathan Pardoe, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation, said: “What an incredible achievement to reach this milestone in under six months, and a testament to all the hard work and commitment of our wonderful traders and staff who have worked tirelessly to make the new market such an outstanding success.
“Chester can look forward to a great summer with new traders joining and the outdoor seating area offering the opportunity to enjoy your food and drink in the sunshine. If you have not had the chance to visit yet, I urge you to do so and enjoy the rest of Chester’s unique attractions and heritage.”
The current mix of traders is approximately 60 per cent goods or produce, and 40 per cent food and beverage stalls. Food and beverage traders include two cafés, an ice cream and pudding parlour, authentic Thai, Bangladeshi, Mexican and Vegan street-food, seafood shack, French patisserie, fresh pasta kitchen to eat-in or take-away, Neapolitan pizzas and an innovative combination of a traditional English café by day and a Mediterranean bistro in the evening.
Produce and goods traders include a butcher and fishmonger, deli, optician, wool and haberdashery, phone repair, handmade cosmetics, pet store, vintage clothing, a florist and plant stalls plus a custom gift store offering while-you-wait personalisation. See the full trader line-up:
