Chester MP inspects major canal repair

Chris Matheson MP has thanked Welsh Water for the work being done on a major city centre repair.

Following the recent collapse of a section of sewer beneath City Road Bridge over the Canal Side, Chris joined Cllrs Martyn Delaney and Samantha Dixon in late 2021 to view the progress being made.

He said: "I was pleased to visit the Canal Side recently and would like to thank Ronnie and his colleagues from Welsh Water for the vital work they are doing to repair the damaged sewer. Welsh Water tell me that work is taking longer than expected as the scale of the job is revealed through continued investigation. It is frustrating for everyone, but Welsh Water aren’t wasting any time and are working as quickly as possible. Since our initial visit, there has been further progress and from Monday 10th January, work on the pumps and pipework will be undertaken to ensure there is no flooding during the major tunnelling work which will be necessary.”

During this period, the footpath will be closed again and a diversion in place. The steps down from City Road will be closed for two weeks, though access to Old Harker’s Arms will remain open.

Chris added: "Thank you to Welsh Water for the work they have been doing. I know that they are doing all they can to keep disruption to a minimum during what is a very significant long-term repair operation.”
