Gift Café’s Last Post heard throughout Puddington

Visitors to the Gift Café in Puddington were moved to hear the coffee shop’s chef and supervisor playing the Last Post on Remembrance Day.

Debbie Williams popped out of the kitchen at 11am to play the musical call associated with military ceremonies and wartime remembrance on her cornet.

Coffee shop customers and residents from Chapel House Care’s two nearby care homes gathered to listen to her and the music could be heard throughout the village.

Debbie, who has played the cornet since she was seven, said: “I love playing the Last Post because it is such a symbolic piece of music.

“It was an honour to stand in the garden of the coffee shop and play to customers and residents.”

Gift Café is a not-for-profit coffee shop run by Retain Wellbeing, a not-for-profit community organization focused on making lives better for those with memory difficulties and their loved ones. It is a dedicated dementia friendly coffee shop which is open to all, including residents of Chapel House Care.

Caroline Hutton of Retain Wellbeing said: “It was very moving to hear Debbie playing the Last Post in the coffee shop gardens.

“Lots of people who heard it said it was really poignant and they were pleased to be there. One of the local residents said the tune could be heard throughout Puddington.

“It was a fitting tribute played by our talented Debbie and we were delighted to be joined by so many residents from Chapel House Care who all held poppies in recognition of those who gave their lives for us.”
