Chester Lions Club is a local charity made up of volunteers, who raise funds and provide support to local good causes.
They are part of the largest service organisation in the world. 2020 is the Club’s Diamond Jubilee. Formed in 1960, the year Coronation Street started, the Club has raised well over £2million.
You may know the Lions from the annual fireworks display on The Racecourse, which they used to organise for many many years. But there is much more to the Club than just that.
For over 60 years the Club has helped local organisations from small community groups to major ones such as The Hospice and The Countess of Chester Hospital.
In 2013 the Club, supported by the Lions Club International Foundation, funded the fitting out of the Living Well Centre at The Hospice at a cost of £48,500.
Since 1992 Chester Lions have donated over £124,000 for many lifesaving items of equipment for The Countess of Chester Hospital. This year they have funded the fitting out of the nurses’ station in the new Neonatal Unit at the hospital at a cost of over £40,000.
The Club supports not only major projects but also smaller ones. We have funded equipment for junior football clubs, youth organisations, pre-schools, Riding for the Disabled, Barrowmore,Hope House Children’s Hospice, Save the Family, Space, Claire House, and local special schools.
As well as funding equipment we also support activities. These have included helping fund young people undertake international trips like scouts and guides attending jamborees, trips and experiences for Cheshire Young Carers, local canal trips for The Mulberry and Canal Street Centres, annual gymkhanas at riding for the Disabled Centres and The Feedom Equine Centre, Miles of Smiles with their annual trips to Euro Disney.
Many of these activities have been seriously affected by the pandemic. But Chester Lions Club are funding The Hospice and Crossroads Care provide, at this festive time, Goody Bags for service users who cannot access their usual support.
Lions also organise locally a reading glasses collection and recycling scheme and of course the Message in a Bottle Scheme.
To fund all these The Club has organised local fund raising events. By far the biggest was the annual firework display on the Racecourse. But don’t forget Lions ran amongst other events a Ladies Driving Challenge, Musical Extravaganzas, a Festival of Transport in 1989, a Honda Goldwings event, and Clay Pigeon shoots. We also had 10 annual places in the London Marathon which helped local charities raise much needed funds.
Chester Lions have supported the local community for 60 years. The local community has very generously supported The Lions for 60 years. Now we need the community’s support even more. Fund raising has stopped for Covid.
Chester Lions have set up a Just Giving page to enable the public and local businesses to donate and help us continue the good work we do.
