Local MP Justin Madders has shown his support for Brain Tumour Awareness Month by meeting volunteers at a Parliamentary drop-in.
Former Shadow Health Minister Mr Madders, MP for Ellesmere Port and Bromborough, met three people living with a brain tumour to hear more about the unique challenges they face.
Speaking after The Brain Tumour Charity’s Westminster event, he said:
“I am extremely grateful to the volunteers from The Brain Tumour Charity who shared their story with me.
“I’ll be encouraging the Government not to forget about brain tumours in its upcoming 10-Year Health Plan and subsequent National Cancer Plan. There are differences in how brain tumours develop and can be treated which mean they are often neglected by wider cancer plans in the past. This we must change.”
Mr Madders added:
“Brain tumours are the leading cancer killer of children and adults under 40. I’ve heard from my constituents that people diagnosed with a brain tumour often have to wait a very long time for their diagnosis, are not receiving the care they are entitled to or cannot access better treatments.”
Cameron Miller, director of external affairs and strategy at The Brain Tumour Charity, said:
“For too long, people with brain tumours have been left out of cancer plans and improvement initiatives because of the nature of the disease, and now there is a chance to change the way we do things for the future.
“By coming to our event , Justin Madders MP has taken a vital step in helping us raise awareness so we really want to thank him for his support this Brain Tumour Awareness Month.”
