A man has been jailed for controlling and abusing a woman in Ellesmere Port.
Kalib Morris, of HMP Altcourse, but previously of Ellesmere Port, appeared at Chester Crown Court on Wednesday 26 March where he was sentenced to 37 months.
The 27-year-old had pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour, three counts of assault by beating, criminal damage and theft.
Morris had subjected a former partner to physical and mental abuse between 2023 and 2024. This included controlling and monitoring use of her mobile phone, controlling what clothes she wore, controlling when she spoke to or saw her family, taking her money, being verbally and physically abusive, checking on her movements and injuring her pet dog.
On one occasion Morris was verbally abusive towards her and grabbed her face, biting her hand when she tried to get him to release her.
During another incident, the victim left her address, leaving Morris in the property. When she returned, she found Morris had damaged her television and thrown rubbish, her clothing, and her possessions throughout the address.
The victim called police and Morris was arrested. He was released on bail pending further enquiries, with strict conditions not to contact the victim. Despite this, Morris continued his relationship with the victim, where she felt trapped by him.
During this period, he assaulted her by throwing a television remote control at her. On another occasion, the victim called police to report Morris had grabbed her hair, pulled her to the floor and stolen her phone from her.
Morris was subsequently arrested again. Following a thorough investigation, Morris was charged with the offences.
Speaking after the sentencing, DC Lister said:
“It’s clear Morris showed no regard for his victim, controlling major aspects of her life and making her feel trapped. Even after being arrested and given conditions not to contact the victim, he continued to be abusive towards her.
“Thanks to the bravery of the victim in coming forwards, officers were able to thoroughly investigate these offences, putting him before the courts where he admitted his abhorrent pattern of behaviour.
“I hope this case demonstrates how seriously we take offences of this nature, and we would urge anyone who believes they have been a victim of controlling and coercive behaviour or physical abuse to get in touch with us.
“We treat all reports sensitively, ensuring you have access to help and support."
