'Surviving Bleak House' - A Chester resident's book on her experience of living in a women's aid refuge

This year has been an important time for Chester resident LAL Kelly to release her debut memoir, 'Surviving Bleak House'. Her book tells of her experience of living in a women's aid refuge for over twelve months.

According to the BBC news website, domestic abuse has increased dramatically since the start of the Covid - 19 pandemic.  There has been a 20% rise globally, with figures at around 7% in England and Wales.

Lal was a victim of domestic abuse.  To escape, she moved into a women's aid refuge in the North-West of England, where she lived with dozens of women and families.  This memoir delivers an honest and raw account of settling into life with so many other victims of abuse.  Offering an emotional look at the highs and lows of living with displaced characters with their own personal issues, this book is emotive yet inspirational for all survivors.

Lal wanted this book to help other women by sharing her experience.  The message behind this memoir is that you can survive domestic abuse.

"I had been writing my memoir for a while, but with the recent rise in domestic abuse, I believed it would be a good idea to highlight theses issues now.  Hopefully, it will relate to these unfortunate women and show them that there is help and they too can become survivors"

It became cathartic to write such an in-depth memoir.  At times I felt I couldn't finish it because I was touching in serious personal events, but I had to remember why I was writing it, and the impact it could have on other women".

"There is a life worth living and a life you can love".

Lal tells us how Sue Miller at team author UK helped her.  Having TAUK behind me encouraged me to get this book published, they helped me every step f the way.

Surviving Bleak House officially launched on 9th December during an online Facebook event where Lal shared videos and information.  She has also revealed details of her next book based on her experience of grief.  Lal is a qualified bereavement counsellor and feels with her experience and knowledge she can help others to overcome their own grief.
